A inflexão de gênero na construção de uma nova especialidade médica

This article addresses the process of inception of Palliative Care, a new medical specialty geared to helping terminally ill patients. This concept, developed in England during the 1960s, was applied in Brazil by the late 1980s. Its aims are to give assistance during the dying process, while providing “spiritual support” to the patient and his/her family, also
involving the realm of emotions. Ethnographic observation and interviews with Brazilian professionals indicated a majority of women professionals in palliative care units. This article discusses the gender representations at play among the professionals involved with this new specialty. Those reflect widely disseminated social images, beliefs and emotions associated to dying, and the roles of women and men in that sphere(AU)
